Let’s play a simple game of word association. When I say Gwyneth Paltrow, you say? Gut health seminars! DIY face masks! Healing crystals!!! Yes, yes and yes. But whilst the polished glamazon nodding enthusiastically from her end seat of a wellness panel is the Gwyneth we’ve come to know and love today, one nostalgic Pinterest search proves that while GP’s life in the nineties may have been a little less clean living, her wardrobe was the ultimate lesson in cool minimalism.

Thanks to cult-worthy Instagram accounts @90sAnxiety and @90sMilk, our obsession with the era that brought us slinky slip silhouettes, cardigans as tops and barely-there sandals continues to be strong almost 30 years later. And no one’s outfits did the most (whilst doing the least) quite like GP’s did. Case in point: that slinky Donna Karen bottle green skirt and cardigan combo we’re all trying to copy this Summer.

Whilst popular culture has us mood-boarding, designers of the moment are feeding our hunger for nostalgia in fashion through their FW19 collections.  For Maggie Marilyn and Lee Mathews, the slip silhouette is a hero this season, both in neutral tones and ditzy florals (another 90s go-to), while Joseph and Layeur showcase the perfect maxi trench in relaxed silk and one of the most staple fabrics of the 90s and now: leather.

If you’re in the market for some retro minimalism without matching your outfit to your other half (remember the Brad Pitt era?) or opting for a one-cut-does-not-fit-all pixie hairstyle, try these GP tried-and-tested details on for size. A loose shape: perfect for an added modesty element and ultra-comfortable. Colour-blocking in neutrals: black and nude are always winners. Oversized tailoring: the piece that will go a long way in smartening up your otherwise relaxed ensemble. That said, there really is only one key consideration when nailing the look: just don’t overthink it.
